Mt Peney, Savoie by Mathieu Bouyoud

Hungry for overhangs.

Mathieu Bouyoud is one of the new generation of young climbers who are quite at home in 8-rated scenarios. Aged 15, he got into equipping routes and asked his father to find him a cliff face that was easy to access, with the biggest possible overhang, featuring tufas, devoid of any metal hardware – and, if possible, near home. A piece of cake, really…

Digging deep into his memories, his father recalled an area of Mont Peney: its lower half offered more or less what Mathieu was after, with a very tasty rock overhang. Despite the presence of water seepages, the tufas weren't yet fully formed... but there could be no waiting – pools of water would take their place.

Despite a few doubts, Mathieu quickly went to work: he opened up an aided route from the bottom, following the technical advice of his father, a long-time regular in these parts.

He gleaned a few tips from Gaël B. from Les Chaux, and went about opening up new routes at a ravenous tempo, despite snow and rain. Every line he picked out was rapidly named and equipped for fear that someone else would beat him to it; and finally he free-climbed them.

The result? Twenty routes rated 6b to 8a+, and a guide kindly provided free of charge by Mathieu.

Approach:

Location:

France, Savoie, near Chambéry

1hr from Geneva, Switzerland

45mins from Lyon, France

Altitude: 900m

Orientation: south-east (in the shade from 3pm in summer)

On the D912 heading south towards Chambéry, in La Féclaz, 500m before Les Déserts, turn left onto an asphalt forest road (small chapel).

At the first hairpin bend, take the (signed) trail that passes through the rock outcrop (via Passage de la Dorette) and drops down in the direction of St Jean D'Arvey. Once past this outcrop, follow a trail on the right which leads along the bottom of Le Peney cliff.

Locate a big wall with grey streaks, dominated by an overhang. To the left of this wall, the cliff features a large dihedron from which the Festin de Babette route starts. The Grande Expérience sector is on its left.

Allow about 15 minutes from the bend in the forest road.
