Peter Hillary, son of Sir Edmund Hillary who became the first man to climb Mount Everest, reached the summit of Mt McKinley the June 18th.
He and his climbing companion Roddy McKenzie left at 10 at night (in broad daylight up there!) and climbed in brutally cold conditions, reaching the summit in 8 hours. Peter estimates it was minus 22 degrees F and blowing 30 knots. The end of his nose froze and he had difficulty getting his camera out and Roddy's zip froze closed altogether. On the way back down to their camp at 5,242m, they had to replug all their steps again. They are rallying there now, watching the weather for their descent, delighted that all their fingers and toes are intact.!
McKinley is the highest summit of North America, 6194 meters above sea level. It’s situated near the Arctic circle, hence the extreme cold, even in the height of summer.
With this successful climb, Peter Hillary has now completed the last in his 7 Summits series: the highest peak on each of the seven continents.
